Career Planning & Management

At our Nanaimo Campus on May 14 they were doing a career planning with a group of Sprott Shaw students and decided to bring in a mystery employer to do a round table discussion. Each student was able to do a short introduction of themselves and then the employer was able to do one for himself without exposing who he was or where he was from.
The group of students then proceeded to ask one question where they were able to practice their networking skills. Once the students completed this, the employer took the floor talking openly about his business. After the guest speaker was done, an opportunity to have an open discussion happened. The students were then provided an opportunity to have a “Formal Interview” and receive feed back.
Some comments students made were:
“I found the things you talked about for interviews very interesting and applied them to my test interview with Kevin… he said he would hire me!!
“Dividing us into groups are having us ask each other interview questions was a real challenge and bringing in a surprise guest speak and having us prepare questions to find out what business he represented was a prefect wrap-up!”
“Most importantly, thank you for taking personal interest in us, it is much appreciated!”
“Kevin Jessup was very good and comfortable to with. Thank you for taking the time to arrange this opportunity as well as all the other speakers you arrange to come in. I truly believe that networking is very important and the “young ones” in the class will find out shortly once they finish that not taking the opportunities as they come in one less contact you might have to pursue your chosen path.”
