New West May Assembly
by Fox on May.14, 2009, under Events
I was invited to attend the New Westminster’s monthly Assembly today. It was great to experience the assembly first hand. During the assembly Doug, the Director of the New West campus had mentioned that Ursula and he have been holding these assemblies since April 2001, so 8 years.
Initially these assemblies were meant to introduce the new students to the campus as well as say good bye to the graduating students. But from attending an assembly it is easy to see how the assembly has evolved into something much better.
Today’s assembly Doug introduced the new students to the campus, while Ursula said farewell to the graduating Business and LPN students. Whenever it is a student’s last day with their program they wear a red rose. To show staff and students that this will be their last day at the campus! The LPN students will be writing their National test next Wednesday, good luck to you all! Sprott Shaw wishes all graduating students the best with all their future endeavours. After much applause the stage was turned to me. This caught me off guard to be quite honest; I introduced myself and what my job entails at Sprott Shaw Community College. Hopefully I did ok! :S
One of the reasons why I find these assemblies unique is they have a talent show segment, if you have any talent from dancing to singing you are more than welcome to take the stage. Today we had a student named Ritchie M; she is a tiny woman who by appearance seemed quite shy. But when she took the stage I could honestly say she blew me away! The voice that came out of that little woman was amazing.
After the talent segment there were some house keeping topics to be discussed such as the big graduation ceremony coming up next week. Door prizes were given out and the winners, who both happened to be new students. All a coincidence!
I would like to thank the New West Campus for inviting me to the assembly, it was great! Thank you to Doug, Ursula, staff and students!
