Kelowna Olympic Games
by Fox on Mar.09, 2010, under Events
Did you see that Hockey Game??? No…not the one where Crosby makes the ultimate goal of his life, giving the entire nation something to scream about, but the one where students had to play against each other under less than desirable conditions? Or how about the breathtaking performance of our figure skaters, the nail biting curling match or the inspirational Torch Relay??
That’s right, the Olympic Games just didn’t happen in Vancouver, it happened in Kelowna! Yes, even WE felt the magic from the Olympics and we wanted to participate in our own version of this world wide event.
Lots of chaotic fun was had by students and staff over a two day period hosting there very own Olympic Games. I would even go as far as saying that eyebrows were raised, smirks were made and uncontrollable laughter was had by all. But nothing beat the feeling of pride when our Olympians stepped up to the podium to accept their medals.
Thanks everyone that participated and contributed to the fun! It was an event to remember!
Awesome event!!!

East Vancouver End of the Year Potluck 2009
by Fox on Jan.12, 2010, under Events
On December 17, 2009 the East Vancouver Campus held one of their biggest and most successful potlucks ever. The potluck was held in the East Vancouver campuses new nursing/rca building. Over 100 staff and students attended the potluck. Entertainment was provided by 4 talented students who sang their hearts out. Prizes were given out for people who gave food bank donations. Prizes included Canucks tickets, Sprott Shaw paraphernalia, and an autographed Kevin Bieksa hat. Students who donated food put their names into a draw for prizes. East Vancouver total food donations reached a record high, over 500 items (about 14 boxes). There was plenty of food for everyone! I spoke to the lovely advisor from the East Vancouver campus and she was saying how she is grateful to have such amazing students and coworkers.
What a great way to wrap up the year and a very generous donation!!

Spirit of Giving
by Fox on Dec.15, 2009, under Campus News, Events
The Maple Ridge campus is well into the Holiday spirit, all the students and staff deserve a pat on the back for getting into the spirit of giving this holiday season, so far this year we have accomplished the following:
Christmas Food Drive Competition–> Congrats to the CSWSS class for accumulating the most donations for the Maple Ridge food bank. Overall, we managed to raise over 400 items so far in less than a month.
Adopt a Family –> Maple Ridge would like to thank the Cythera Transition House Society for recommending a family in need. This year the Maple Ridge campus adopted a single mom who is just recovering from surgery and needed some assistance providing a good Christmas for her kids, a 14 year old son and a 19 year daughter who is expecting her first child in April.
The Maple Ridge Campus raised enough money to buy everything on their Christmas Wish List!!!
Salvation Army Blankets and Clothing Drive –> This has been an overwhelming success, raising over 70 items so far, again Maple Ridge would like to commend the students and staff at the campus for being in the spirit giving.
Both the Food Bank and Salvation Army drives are continuing throughout the holiday season.
More exciting news for the Maple Ridge campus include:
Congratulations to Director Rick to being elected to the board of the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce
Congratulations to the staff and students of the Maple Ridge campus PN program for achieving a 100% pass rate on the National exam!!
Season’s Greetings!!

STUFF A BUS!!!
by Fox on Dec.04, 2009, under Events
For the last four years, SSCC students at the Kelowna campus have ‘given back’ by donating “non-perishable” food items to the Kelowna Food Bank via STUFF A BUS Campaign!
Students are given two rules:
#1 No money; just food
#2 Make sure you are taken care of before you take care of others
Since the Kelowna campus first started our involvement with this community event, the Kelowna campus have continuously exceeded the previous years total. This year, the bar was set HIGH… and at one point… Kelowna thought they had raised the bar TOO HIGH!! Last years total was $1,700.00 so logically they set their new target at $2000.00!
It is with great pride to announce that not only did the Kelowna campus meet the $2000.00 target, but they BEAT IT!! The overall total was $2,700.00!!! The Kelowna campus broke all records but students and staff buying into a cause close to our communities heart. On November 26, 2009, students and staff announced the total raised, live on the popular morning radio station, Sun FM with Tarzan Dan and Susan Knight.
A local company heard what Sprott Shaw was doing and wanted to donate money on Sprott Shaw’s behalf. Special thanks to Command Industries who cut a cheque for $200.00, which has given the Kelowna Food Bank over $600.00 worth of food. The ripple effect has indeed started!!!
In the Kelowna community, this campaign is a one week promotion. Sprott Shaw Community College has contributed to help raise over $5000.00 over 18,00 pounds of food for the Kelowna Food bank in total. Congrats to all staff and students… everyone did such an inspirational job!! Well done!!
The target for next year has been set!! I am sure that will not be a problem!!

The East Vancouver campus had 9 students attend with their family and friends. The Pinning Ceremony took place at the Renfrew Community Center and the students underwent the old tradition of the pinning and capping of new nurses. This is a tradition dating and originating back to Florence Nightingale in the 1800′s. Students receive a traditional nurses cap, a pin and a candle while the Practical Nursing students recite the Florence Nightingale Pledge.
