Superhero’s
by Fox on Jul.16, 2010, under Campus News
The definition of a Superhero is as follows:
Superhero: a fictional hero having extraordinary or superhuman powers; also : an exceptionally skillful or successful person
Last year, the Kelowna campus wrote a story about Annie, one of our PN instructors who has survived a rare form of blood cancer. To pay it forward, Annie rode her bike from Vancouver to Seattle to raise funds for cancer.
This year, Annie did it again! A true Superhero! Surviving yet another year, Annie braved the wind and rain for two days to bike to Seattle. Annie even got back on her bike with a smile after a fellow cyclist forced her off the road! Annie did this not because she had to, but because wanted to help those fight their own battles with cancer. A true Superhero.
But the story does not end there. Being a Superhero is contageous! Annie is a well loved inspirational instructor. Her students heard about her efforts to raise funds for her Ride to Conquer Cancer. Students put together a gift basket with items donated by the entire class and raffled off tickets. Within five days, students were able to raise an extra $605 for Annie’s cause. With pride, students presented Annie with the funds raised.
Superhero’s come in all forms. We all have it in us to be ‘exceptional’….its all a matter of heart, choice and passion. Congrats Annie! Thank you for being our Superhero!
Have A Heart 2010
by Fox on May.03, 2010, under Campus News
Direct From Our Kelowna Campus:
I swear sometimes we just get lucky! We just finished off a very long day helping to raise money for the Childrens wing at the hospital. With very little effort in prepping this event, we were able to find over 35 students who WANTED to donate their time, giving us a RECORD BREAKING amount of $5000 raised in 4 hours! Our instructors were instrumental in drumming up the excitement based on previous years of fun! Their support is very appreciated and will do my best at acknowleding them.
Students were smiling and excited with every coin that was dropped in their buckets…which made everyone who donated smile right back. This just propelled to a fantastic vibe!! You should have seen the excitment plastered on their faces! Sun FM were so supportive and cheered us on all the way!
I can’t remember being this proud….and I think that pride is shared by everyone who was there today! Magic!

Spirit of Giving
by Fox on Dec.15, 2009, under Campus News, Events
The Maple Ridge campus is well into the Holiday spirit, all the students and staff deserve a pat on the back for getting into the spirit of giving this holiday season, so far this year we have accomplished the following:
Christmas Food Drive Competition–> Congrats to the CSWSS class for accumulating the most donations for the Maple Ridge food bank. Overall, we managed to raise over 400 items so far in less than a month.
Adopt a Family –> Maple Ridge would like to thank the Cythera Transition House Society for recommending a family in need. This year the Maple Ridge campus adopted a single mom who is just recovering from surgery and needed some assistance providing a good Christmas for her kids, a 14 year old son and a 19 year daughter who is expecting her first child in April.
The Maple Ridge Campus raised enough money to buy everything on their Christmas Wish List!!!
Salvation Army Blankets and Clothing Drive –> This has been an overwhelming success, raising over 70 items so far, again Maple Ridge would like to commend the students and staff at the campus for being in the spirit giving.
Both the Food Bank and Salvation Army drives are continuing throughout the holiday season.
More exciting news for the Maple Ridge campus include:
Congratulations to Director Rick to being elected to the board of the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce
Congratulations to the staff and students of the Maple Ridge campus PN program for achieving a 100% pass rate on the National exam!!
Season’s Greetings!!

Winner of the 2009 New Westminster Business Excellence Award
by Fox on Dec.14, 2009, under Campus News, Press
In early October the New Westminster campus had been nominated for the annual business excellence award in New Westminster. Annually, the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Celebration of Business Excellence competition process, in which companies are nominated, submissions are made and adjudication is done by five judges from the business community. This process culminates in a gala dinner at which the winners are announced.
The New West campus felt good and quite gratifying about being nominated. But winning is better!! The New West Campus won the award for Business excellence in New Westminster for 2009, and they received their plaque at the Chamber of Commerce-sponsored dinner. There were five other nominees including the Boat House Restaurant at the Inn on the Quay!
Doug the Director of the New West campus is very proud! Doug thanks his outstanding New Westminster team! From the superlative and absolutely exemplary job of Ursula, she always does from the time of admission and throughout the year, with the help of Ed and other PN advisers, and with the caring and upbeat assistance of Swashna and Doreen, through to the professional competent, and supportive teachers like Barb, Mitch, Terry and her ECE staff, Gail and her PN staff, Judith and her clinical instructors – and others who have taught for us – and finally to the job preparation stage and beyond with New Westminsters GSR Lindy, the satisfaction and success of the New West students and clients have been at the heart of everything the New West campus does. And this is true throughout Sprott Shaw College.
“Proudly serving the New Westminster Community for Over 15 years”
Congratulations to the New West campus, we are very proud of you!

The Importance of Networking
by Fox on Jun.19, 2009, under Campus News, Press
I find that some students do not take advantage of our guest speakers and do not understand the importance of networking! A Nanaimo student just got HIRED!! Here is the e-mail she sent our Marketing Rep Yolanda:
“Yesterday I was interviewed for a receptionist position at R.W Wall Let and they offered me the job; which of course I accepted! I start on Monday
As far as I know, the job wasn’t advertised, but Lee Mason passed on my name. I renewed my acquaintance with her when you had her in as a guest speaker, and she suggested I keep in touch. When I completed my studies, I let her know I was looking for work, and this is the outcome. Lesson Learned! Networking works!…” Patricia T
The fact is a lot of the time when applying for a job it’s not what you know but who you know! Congrats to Patricia and to all of our SSCC students when guest speakers come in make the effort to ask questions and a good first impression. Who knows what could happen.

Yolanda (Marketing Rep) and Patricia (Nanaimo Alumni)

Maligayang bati Sprott Shaw
by Fox on Jun.10, 2009, under Campus News, Press, Programs
Last year Sprott Shaw opened its first campus in the Philippines in partnership with the Far Eastern University in Moyrata, Manila. To date their are over 130 students attending Sprott Shaw’s RCA health program. Upon the last visit to the Philippines in March 2009, the campus received more computers, LCD projectors, additional Internet connections and of course the Sprott Shaw job bell to hang on the wall, not to mention a couple of goodies for the students.
On April 23, 2009 it was Sprott Shaw’s 106th birthday and the campus in the Philippines celebrated Sprott Shaw’s birthday with contests and games with the Far Eastern University staff and two extremely large cakes!! The campus was able to feed five other departments within the Far Eastern University! How big was this cake… makes me wonder!
The students absolutely love the program and the Canadian style of teaching in the classroom! The first set of RCA students have finished their clinical with GREAT reviews; well they are SSCC students! A clinical is when they go to hospitals under supervision and get hands on work/practise; basically a practicum. The next class heads out to do their first clinical in Manila this month!! We at Sprott Shaw wish you all the best!
To all the instructors and staff in the Philippines keep up the hard work, you have made the campus great!! Maraming salamat sa iyo ang lahat ng!
Hopefully I will come down to visit
Stayed tuned for more information regarding additional programs launching in the Philippines and the newest Sprott Shaw campus opening in Quezon City!!

RCA Starting in Salt Spring
by Fox on May.26, 2009, under Campus News, Notices, Programs
Our Duncan campus will start their Resident Care Attendant (RCA) program at their satellite campus in Salt Sping on June 1.
Our Resident Care Attendant (also known as Long-Term Care Aides, Orderlies, Geriatric Aides and Health care Workers) represent a large and growing job group. The inclusion of a community training home support section in this program is valuable because of this area of care has a high employment rate for Sprott Shaw graduates.
With this program you can provide all aspects of personal care to patients in nursing homes, extended care facilities, rehabilitation centres, hospitals and community health agencies. As a worker in this field, you would require good physical health, stamina and a genuine desire to be a care giver. Patience, understanding, emotional stability, dependability and team spirit are all traits that can help you excel as a Resident Care Attendant.
**CPR, First Aid, Food Safe and Basic WHMIS will be completed during the program.
